In 2004, Carl founded Group Excellence, a pioneering tutoring company that quickly grew to become the largest of its kind in Texas. Over the years, Group Excellence provided over 800,000 hours of tutoring, created thousands of jobs, and earned recognition as an Inc. 500 company and the 5th fastest-growing educational company in America.

In a surprising twist, Carl regained Group Excellence in 2011 at 10% of the original cost. Leading GEX Management, he achieved a historic IPO in 2016, becoming the youngest African American to take a US company public.
